Horse loving girls are really hard to buy for. They don’t dream of malls, or jewelry – they are happier at a barn or a feed store and their idea of dressing up is a clean, creased pair of jeans.
If you are a non-horsey guy dating or married to a horsey girl here are some ideas.
1. Grooming tools. They are usually pretty cheap – buy a variety of brushes (hard bristles, soft bristles etc), check out her favorite brand of fly spray and get one of those, splurge on one of the premium shampoos that are color enhancer – if her horse has white feet then buy one of the white brighteners. For extra points have the box be a brand new water bucket. 2. Magazine subscriptions – If she shows stock horses then Equine Chronicle is the one. There are breed specific magazines as well, just google her favorite breed and you will find them. For hunter gals it is The Chronicle of the Horse and if you have absolutely no clue then Horse and Rider is always a safe choice.
3. Jewelry – If you have to buy her something shiny then look for something that she can wear riding. For earrings hoops are usually no a good choice as they are not really safe while riding – when in doubt go with studs.
4. Big ticket items – Tack is very personal so unless you are exactly sure what she wants do not buy it. Don’t assume that all saddles are the same. Instead get her a certificate from the store. For western riders nothing says love like Harris Leather. Reins and spur straps are relatively inexpensive and could be bought without approval and when she sees the Harris logo expect a reaction like a little blue Tiffany’s box.
5. Trailer stuff – if she has a trailer then you are really lucky. Lowes or Home Depot gift cards are great. Or if you are really adventurous buy her that expensive hose new box fans for the stalls and a few electric cords. Also go online to the online tack stores and look for their trailer supplies. You can never have too many bucket hangers or buckets!
6. Leather halters – A leather halter with matching lead is a surefire hit. Add a brass plate with the horses name and you have a home run!
7. When in doubt buy leadropes – she can never have too many!
